A Perk For Disabled Kids

I always like to let people know when something is available to benefit them. So this story appealed to me.

As any parent of a disabled child knows, wheelchairs are costly as are many of the items that might be needed. So when I read an article about a company offering free wheelchairs for disabled kids, I was over the moon with joy for what they are doing.

That said, I had to spread the word and their story. First, let me give credit to the original story I refer to which I found online. Kamrin Baker wrote this article May 8, 2025 and it is entitled: ‘Design lab invents first-of-its-kind 3D-printed wheelchair for kids — and will give them away for free’.

The company is MakeGoodNOLA which is a design lab in New Orleans. They created a 3D printed wheelchair, the very first. Kids aged 2-8 are accommodated and the chair has a cartoon-like appearance which will appeal to young minds.

What is truly amazing is everything is 3D printed, even the tires. They indicate since this is the case that anyone having a 3D printer could do this too. The modular design assures the process is straight forward and meant to be relatively easy.

So all anyone would need is to get the files and some filament. They indicate this will be available for anyone under fair use copyright. Once the prototype is done, this will be the case.

Better yet is the knowledge that if ever a part is destroyed or needs repair, you can simply print the part needed. That makes so much sense and modular parts make it all possible.

Something like this is overdue since it serves such a worthwhile purpose. I love it when knowledge is shared and helps others. And the lab had helping disabled kids in mind from the beginning. We might see more from this company in the future. I can’t wait!
