It is a fact that even kids as young as age 4-6 are engaging with AI apps and that should give us pause. We know this is a tool and as such can be very effective but there are also downfalls to this tech we just have to prepare for with our kids.
A big concern as with all applications online is privacy. So checking out what that app or toy says in their policies before the child uses it just makes sense. It will shorten the whole process if you go with recognized companies with decent reputations who are proven not to be risks.
But to be thorough, see what they do with that info and security measures they have in place. Of course, on your end, you can limit all activities with controls offered to parents.
Even adults should be thinking about exposure like if your location can be easily configured. Usually those things can be managed. But the biggest thing is being there for the actual use so you are sure the child understands and is fluent with both the pros and cons.
Talking to teachers at school would also be a good idea to ensure info is handled in a delicate and reliable way. Have your child there for those discussions so they understand the importance of not giving away any personal data.
Where possible, a family account is advisable. Parents do need to assert control. And that includes when kids add to the list new apps It wouldn’t hurt if rather than just reviewing policies, parents also looked for reviews online with reliable sources.
The good news is that when handled properly, these apps can provide personal tailored lessons for your kids. Those who need special treatment due to learning issues can catch up by doing their lessons on their own schedule.
But parents must be persistent about keeping themselves tuned into what your kids are doing and the advancements in those tools. Only then can we be sure nothing inappropriate is about to happen.
