There are all kinds of things you can do with your kids to fill the many hours and keep them entertained. But you might feel like they are rather superficial or have all been done before. If that is the case, how about leaving a lasting memory this year and teaching them a few things that will serve as life lessons.

One thing we forget this time of year is that there are plenty of people who are not as lucky as ourselves and through no fault of their own, they are alone or even homeless and have little to look forward to on this occasion. So letting your kids help you to do a few things to add cheer to their lives and to learn more about kindness for our fellow humans is a great idea. This is the holiday spirit.

Make some treats yourselves for the seniors in your area and include ingredients to make something like a cup of hot chocolate or a cup of herbal tea and wrap them like a gift with a bow. If you know of single seniors in your area, drop them off together.

Get your kids to think about something they could volunteer to do that would help someone else like shovelling the driveway, babysitting their pet, helping them with a shopping trip, etc. By offering the activity themselves, the kids are doing something they do not mind doing and at the same time, they are being generous and kind.

Your kids might also come up with an idea to raise money for their favourite charity. So they could sell off any surplus toys in a garage sale, or sell hot chocolate at a stand, or even do chores for other people who are too busy like taking dogs for a walk. Let them come up with this type of activity and the charity they want to endorse.

Many kids have never seen a soup kitchen and they do not truly understand the homeless. Getting them to help an organization like a church or non profit to serve a meal to these people will open their eyes to how much this is needed and teach them to care.

See what else you can come up with to inspire them to help. This could end up being the best holiday you ever spend together. You are building a strong bond with them and helping others at the same time.
