I don't know anyone who did not grow up with a bully or two to deal with, usually in the school yard. While we make movies that make fun of this particular problem, in reality, it is not fun and is very destructive in our development.

You would think by now with teachers strolling through the play area, this sort of behavior would be stamped out by now. But a bully is very resourceful and can find ways that extend beyond school borders to get at their victims. Also, many bullies themselves were once treated badly as well so have an arsenal of tricks to use in order to get what they want.

Although much older now it still bothers me that this sort of bellow-the-belt activity is prevalent. In fact I got to see it first hand when working with special needs kids in the school system for several years. Bullies love to torment those that stand out as different so I often found myself having to distance that kind of element from my student.

The reason it upsets me is because often those that get targeted do not have an advocate in their corner to talk to or make it all better. That leads to resentment and if never dealt with, this individual can turn from being a nice kid to becoming a mean, moody person nobody wants to be around. Take this kid and in future years, he or she becomes despondent and can even consider terminating their own lives.

As for the bully, he turns into the adult who thinks he deserves to have whatever he wants, an entitled, smug, intolerant person who could easily turn to crime which also includes assaulting other adults. So a problem that could have been caught in early years has now created a monster.

As a shy kid when I was young, I knew all too well the ones to avoid and had experiences that were positive to push me ahead into believing in myself. I was so lucky. As an adult now, I thank my lucky stars and recognize that writing allows me to bring up subjects I care about. I care about making a difference so I make sure to let children know they can handle anything they put their mind to.
