The WWF Says Monarch Butterflies Doubles This Year
There are people in Mexico that keep tabs on the health of the Monarch butterfly migration each year. It seems there is hope this time and we can do our part to help with this.

The World Wildlife Fund in Mexico keeps tabs on the annual migration by butterflies and they indicate the count went from coverage over 2.22 acres to 4.42 acres. While this is definitely a win, conditions must continue to prevail in order to keep numbers there or better in the future.
There was a survey done that detailed this fact with Mexico’s National Commission of Protected Natural areas and the communities in the general area. Their focus is to monitor the health of the populations.
The WWF in Mexico made a plea to help these winged adventurers to continue successful migrations in future years. What is needed is to secure those routes taken by the Monarchs in the sense that habitats and forests remain pristine. That is a story I can support.
People may not realize all the factors that are also contributors to such a success including weather which also means there is enough rainfall to accommodate the needs of these butterflies.
On this route, forests last year suffered less issues. While the change is modest from previous years, it is still better which was enough to make a difference.
Because it is spring and that means you can plant species to help with this issue, be a supporter and consider adding Milkweed to your gardens. This is where Monarchs like to lay their eggs.
If you want to support butterflies in general also consider planting black-eyed susans, the butterfly bush, goldenrod, marigolds, sunflowers, cone flowers, salvia, lavender and many more.
Consider that when you help out other creatures in nature, you are also helping yourself because nature tells us how our ecosystem is doing. We need to be involved and paying attention to this and the preservation of nature in all forms will benefit us all.
