Young People Are Losing The Ability To Do Research

While doing research is still a must in college or university, it is not the option of choice for most young people who prefer quick answers rather than taking a bit longer to ensure the info is correct.

There is a belief by young people that anything you want to know is on the internet. So they do not bother to look up answers in research provisions that offer a much broader reservoir of information.

I think that happens because they grew up thinking that phone attached to their hands at all times has the solution and because it operates by answering questions. The thing is, the material the answers come from is often biased, somethings downright wrong and very limited since data is being removed as new data comes along.

So any one subject does not have the benefit of previous information and the changes that have come about. More importantly, it does not tell you why things have changed and give you a chance to understand the entire picture, not just the small piece of data you have been given.

That means a person is not thinking for themselves. They are taking everything at face value and not even checking to see if this is up-to-date. That requires posing the question you ask in a specific way or entering follow-up questions.

Most young people do not bother to delve further. That insatiable need for speed and a quick reply is leading them down another path that providers of this information are fully aware of.

The algorithms have made sure only what this person already believes is made available as well so no other views or data is provided. What will happen to open debate? Is this one of the reasons people want black and white answers to everything and are so judgmental?

We all have a right to believe what we wish. But without data to back it up, you may base your direction and values on something that is not even true. We need to care about our lives more and those of our kids so they have the best opportunities to thrive and lead a life not besieged by misinformation and disinformation.
